ARTIST PROPOSAL REVIEW PROCEDURES

The San Jose Museum of Art encourages proposal submissions from individual artists. The following guidelines are intended to help us expedite the review of these submissions by insuring that each artist proposal is as complete as possible. If you require additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Curatorial Department at (408) 271-6847.

Written Material

Include a current resume listing solo and group exhibitions, education, teaching or professional experience, commissions, and bibliography. In addition, please include an artist statement if available. The artist statement should be a brief reflection of your personal feelings/intentions as an artist, and may or may not include a description of particular processes and media. If you are submitting a proposal for an installation or performance, please also include an exhibition statement outlining your spatial and material needs.

Visual Material

The most important part of your submission will be the visual documentation of your work. Please include a representative selection of slides or photographs of the work you wish to exhibit (5 to 20 images is standard). Each slide or photograph must be labeled with the artist's name as well as the title, date, media, and dimensions of the work. Please also indicate the correct viewing position of the slide with an arrow. We recognize the limitations of slide reproduction, especially with regards to three dimensional work. If the Exhibition Committee feels that a studio visit is necessary, we will try to arrange one at your convenience. Do not send original work.

Proposal Submission

Send your materials to the Curatorial Department, San Jose Museum of Art, 110 South Market Street, San Jose, CA 95113. If you would like your materials returned to you, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope or other packaging with sufficient return postage. Unfortunately, we do not have space to retain all artist submissions, so unless we request to keep your materials on file, they may be discarded if you do not provide for their return.

Proposal Review

Each proposal is carefully reviewed by the Exhibitions Committee. Meetings are usually held on a quarterly basis, so a response may take up to 12 weeks. If the Museum decides to proceed, you will be contacted by the Chief Curator and further exhibition details will be discussed at that time. Oftentimes we will find a proposal very interesting, but will have no immediate space on our exhibition schedule. With the artist's permission, we then keep the proposal on file in the event of a vacancy. We appreciate and value your efforts as an artist, and look forward to receiving your proposal. Thank you for your interest in the San Jose Museum of Art.
