    Become an SJMA docent! 

    The San Jose Museum of Art’s Docent Council seeks candidates for the 2014 docent training class. Prospective volunteer docents desire to learn about contemporary art and to provide positive museum experiences for visitors of all ages. A background in art is not required: a passion for lifelong learning is.  

    The next new docent training class begins January 2014. The program includes seminars on the history of contemporary art, learning theories, art interpretation strategies, and touring techniques, as well as  selected readings, in-gallery training, and tour observations.

    Commitment and Requirements

    • Successfully complete the docent training class
    • Serve a minimum of two assigned two-hour gallery shifts per month (available tour shifts include weekends and weekdays)
    • Fulfill a minimum of three years as a docent
    • Attend all required briefings and trainings
    • Research artists and art movements as needed for new exhibitions
    • Volunteer, on a rotating basis, for leadership roles on the docent council
    • Maintain e-mail and Internet access
    • Be a member of SJMA at the $50 level or above
    • Pay annual docent dues and purchase required texts

    Qualifications

    • Strong communication and listening skills in individual and group interactions
    • Appreciation and respect for a wide variety of creative processes
    • A positive and flexible attitude
    • Enthusiasm for representing SJMA
